The 29th Annual Psychotherapy and Faith Conference:
Tending to the Human Spirit in the Time of COVID-19

Friday, November 13, 2020 | 12:00-1:45pm CT
Hosted virtually via Zoom

The coronavirus pandemic is causing psychological, emotional, and spiritual issues that individuals have to deal with while shuttered in their homes, often alone, and socially distanced from family, friends and co-workers. These problems compound the burden for those who already suffer from mental illness – anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation escalate. False and misleading medical information abound, creating fear for many otherwise healthy individuals. The magnitude of these problems reveals a gap in the training of psychotherapy and mental health professionals, as well as clergy who are often the first to see a client in distress. Although trained to manage mental illness, few training programs adequately prepare graduates for a natural disaster of the magnitude of the COVID-19 crisis, which shut the doors of businesses, churches, pharmacies and some mental health facilities. Many health care professionals are justly afraid to see patients for fear they might contract the disease yet may find online communication and phone calls to be inadequate care.

This conference will address the gap in knowledge for healthcare professionals who care for individuals going through an unprecedented global pandemic crisis. Questions to be addressed are: How do you care for the mentally ill when their support system is no longer available? How are diverse religious and other social groups affected? How can psychological and spiritual resources be disseminated to the public in a crisis? What civic and social systems are available to fill the gap? Is it wise to direct clients to Internet sites and online meetings to supplement the care they receive, and what should therapists tell their clients? How can the mental health community prepare ahead for a future crisis of this magnitude?
