Ben Breedlove passed away at the age of 18 on Christmas Day 2011, only 17 days after having a Near-Death Experience. His NDE had prompted him to make a YouTube video (see below) in which he chronicled his life of living with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and described his NDE and other close brushes with death, and the peace and light he had experienced. His video went viral, reaching over 15 million people and prompting many to share their own stories. Join us to hear his mother, Deanne Breedlove, share her memories of her son and the messages of his NDE.

Our Speaker:
Deanne Breedlove
Deanne Breedlove is a mother of three. Her and husband Shawn’s middle child, Ben, passed at the age of 18, only 17 days after having his near death experience. His NDE changed his outlook on life and impacted millions of other people’s perspectives. Ben’s passing prompted Deanne to serve at her local children’s hospital on the Ethics Committee, Patient and Family Advisory Council, Center for Resiliency Advisory Council and to volunteer at Helping Hands Home for Children Residential Treatment Center and the Burke Center for Youth. In light of her son, Ben’s, story, Deanne will share how faith and medicine intersect and how we can be mindful of this when serving others.
Deanne says that her greatest joy is sharing this earthly life with her husband and children. Raising a child with a heart condition that has no cure was a very challenging and unique experience for our family. She seeks to provide hope to families who are caring for loved ones or who have lost a loved one; especially families who have lost a child.

Houston IANDS (International Association for Near-Death Studies) at the Texas Medical Center serves as a safe space to support those who have had a near-death experience as they integrate their experience into their lives. Houston IANDS also serves to inform the public about NDEs and the lessons and messages that experiencers bring back, and to educate the medical community to recognize and appropriately treat people who have had an NDE.
