Honoring Choices: Intersections of Faith, Culture, and Community
A collaboration with hospitals and nursing schools across the Texas Medical Center, this conference helps nurses better understand and tend to the spiritual dimensions of patient care.
This year’s theme focuses on medical decision making. Choices in the healthcare spectrum and particularly at the end of life are informed by diverse cultural considerations, including spiritual beliefs. This conference will focus on how as healthcare providers we can identify and integrate the cultural and spiritual preferences of patients and their families, particularly when they may be different from our own beliefs. Particular attention will be given to individuals who decide to forego care or pursue therapy that may not be beneficial and how we as healthcare providers can evaluate and respect these choices in partnership with the patient.
Objectives:
identify cultural and spiritual beliefs that influence healthcare decision making
discuss resources to support nurses in providing patient-centered, culturally, and spiritually sensitive support to patients when making healthcare decisions
explore approaches to identify and mitigate bias among healthcare professionals that would influence their approach to patient decision support
