Precision Medicine — NIH’s upcoming Initiative

This morning I heard Francis Collins, M.D. on Public Radio talking about a new program to be introduced by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is entitled the Precision Medicine Initiative. Dr. Collins said for too long we have been focused on the management of diseases after they happen and that it was time to study what keeps people healthy. Of course, this makes a lot of sense.
Next year a million individuals will be brought into the program which will study their genome as well as social, environmental and work related factors to determine why some people are healthy and others are not.
To learn more and to register for the initiative, go to the NIH website at: www.inh.gov/precisionmedicine.
